Tiocianatul p\u0103trunde \u00een organism prin alimentele ingerate (ex: legumele crucifere)<sup>5<\/sup>\u00a0sau este sintetizat din cianur\u0103 de enzimele sulfurtransferaze, inclusiv enzima mitocondrial\u0103 rodanez\u0103 \u0219i mercaptopiruvat citosolic sulfurtransferaz\u0103<sup>6<\/sup>. Tiocianatul a fost studiat ca fiind un compus benefic organismului uman \u00een anumite concentra\u021bii, dar \u0219i toxic. Valorile plasmatice ale tiocianatului variaz\u0103 de obicei \u00eentre 5 \u0219i 50 \u03bcM la nefum\u0103tori<sup>7,8<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Consumul de tutun este una dintre cele mai mari provoc\u0103ri cu care se confrunt\u0103 ast\u0103zi asisten\u021ba medical\u0103 global\u0103. Aproximativ 33% din popula\u021bia adult\u0103 consum\u0103 tutun \u00eentr-o form\u0103 sau alta<sup>9<\/sup>. Factorii de risc, cum ar fi utilizarea produselor din tutun, consumul de alcool, mestecarea nucilor de betel \u0219i virusul papilomului uman au fost corelate cu dezvoltarea leziunilor de palat faringian ale fum\u0103torului, leucoplakia, fibroza submucoas\u0103 oral\u0103.<\/p>\n<p>Diferi\u021bi markeri biochimici ai fumului de \u021bigar\u0103, cum ar fi CO, nicotina, cotinina \u0219i tiocianatul, au fost folosi\u021bi ca parametri ai comportamentului fumatului \u00een ultimii ani. Arderea compu\u0219ilor care con\u021bin azot identifica\u021bi \u00een \u021big\u0103ri duce la inhalarea gazului acid cianhidric (HCN) care este \u00een cele din urm\u0103 asimilat \u00een organism ca cianur\u0103 (CN-). Aceasta inhib\u0103 activitatea citocrom oxidazei<sup>10<\/sup>.
